Combat mechanics guide

Updated: 2026-10-10

This guide summarizes the confirmed mechanics of Game of Thrones: Dragonfire β€” the same ones the simulation engine is calibrated with. It's educational content: to compute your best formation with your real roster, use the simulator.

βš”οΈ Quick strategy

🧭 Combat in five ideas

  1. You field a trio: 3 dragons in 3 lanes (left Β· center Β· right), and all three share a single troop type (chosen per army, not per dragon).
  2. Up to 10 rounds. Turn order is decided by Initiative: the fastest hits first, and sometimes kills before taking a hit.
  3. β€œStart of round” happens before anyone acts. A First Strike granted that way counts that very round, a taunt β€œuntil the end of the round” also reaches the fastest dragons, and a self-stun costs the turn (Kalspire at 10β˜… gives up round 1 in exchange for βˆ’50% damage received).
  4. Double rock-paper-scissors: the troop triangle plus the damage chain (βš”οΈ Physical damage is mitigated by Instinct, 🎯 Tactical by Intelligence, πŸ”₯ Fire by Initiative).
  5. Position matters: hits land on the same lane or splash through adjacency, and each dragon's Vanguard boosts one specific flank.
  6. Troops are your health: whoever runs out of troops retreats, and fewer troops means less damage β€” the snowball is real.

πŸ”Ί The troop triangle

🐎 Cavalry beats πŸ›‘οΈ Shieldbearers, which beat 🏹 Archers, which beat πŸ”± Spearmen, which beat 🐎 Cavalry.
βš™οΈ Siege loses to everyone in combat β€” its job is Point of Interest Durability.

Official double optimization: the ideal troop has the advantage against the enemy and positive affinity with your dragon. The Arena's "Auto troops" button does it for you.

🚩 Flanks and the Vanguard

Each dragon's Vanguard β€” its breed mark β€” projects a buff to a fixed flank when deployed (level β‰₯ 16): βš”οΈ Warriors and πŸ›‘οΈ Sentinels aim at the left flank; 🏹 Hunters and πŸ‘‘ Champions at the right. That's why the center is the one projecting its aura, and you should pick it based on your carry's flank.

Honesty: no in-game text says which position activates it; that the center projects it we confirmed in the log of a real battle (Jul 7, 2026). The popular "the center spreads to the whole army" rule comes from a fan tool and doesn't match that log; the simulator keeps it as an adjustable parameter.
